Fires and Floods
Champlain's history has been heavily impacted by flooding from the Great Chazy River. This gallery presents scenes from some of Champlain's well-documented disasters of the elements, showing the dramatic effects nature can have on buildings, spaces and people.
Downtown Champlain has also seen many fires over its 200 year existence. Many buildings in Champlain along Main Street have succumbed to fire. The former Presbyterian Church (built in 1850), for example, was rebuilt in 1928 by architect Hugh McLellan as the Champlain Village Hall. The brick building still stands on the corner of Main and Church Streets. A clock tower replaced the collapsed bell tower.
