The Lake Champlain Tercentenary, Sesquicentennial and Quadricentennial Celebrations
1909, 1959 and 2009
The Quebec Celebrations of 1908
Three large celebrations have taken place in upstate New York and Vermont to commemorate the exploration of Lake Champlain by French explorer Samuel de Champlain. The first celebration was in 1909 to mark the 300th anniversary of Champlain’s exploration of Lake Champlain in July of 1609. This was called the Tercentenary. A second celebration occurred 50 years later, in 1959, and was called the Sesquicentennial. And a third celebration occurred on the 400th anniversary and was called the Quadricentennial or “Quad”.
At the same times, a similar celebration occurred in the Hudson Valley to commemorate the exploration of the Hudson River by Dutch explorer Henry Hudson. Celebrations occurred in 1909, 1959 and 2009 and were called the Hudson – Fulton Celebrations. The name of Fulton commemorates Robert Fulton who invented the first steamboat called the “Clermont.” The steamboat sailed on the Hudson River in 1807.
Finally, another celebration occurred in Québec in 1908. This commemoration was to celebrate Samuel de Champlain’s founding of Québec City in 1608.
All of the celebrations involved elaborate ceremonies, speeches by dignitaries, parades, musical performances, dances, plays and fireworks. In 1909, President Taft visited Burlington and Plattsburgh for the July 4 celebrations and thousands of people attended the events.
Many souvenirs were produced for each celebration and included medals, pins, flags of all shapes, drinking glasses and even ashtrays. Publications were written for each celebration and described the history of the area, the history of Samuel de Champlain and his explorations, a history of Henry Hudson as well as other historical events for each area. In 1909 and 1913, the New York State tercentenary commissioners published a comprehensive final report for the Lake Champlain region as well as the Hudson Valley region.
In 2009, Celine Racine Paquette, a resident of Champlain, New York, was appointed a commissioner by New York governor George Pataki to represent New York State and the Lake Champlain region for the Quadricentennial celebrations. Between 2002 and 2009, Paquette attended many meetings and celebrations. She attended the rededication of the Champlain monuments in Crown Point and Plattsburgh. She also represented New York State at ceremonies in Burlington as well as Québec. Planning books, documents, programs and souvenirs were collected by her during this time.
